The Book Whisperer

You know you are a teaching nerd when you read books about reading during your summer vacation...and LOVE it! I ordered The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child and devoured it in 2 days. There is a group of blogging teachers that are reading the book and doing an online book club. The really exciting part...the AUTHOR of the book is participation! I'm as happy as a fat tick on a dog's ear!

This is a fantastic read for any teacher who feels a disconnect between her students and a love of reading, from her classroom library and authentic literature, and from valid instruction and student independent reading. Our first set of questions are introspective, and we will officially begin the book study in July. Until then, I have a few questions to share, and welcome your responses...whether you are a teacher, a parent, a friend, even a student. I'd love to know your story of falling in love with  reading.

1) What is your favourite book (or series) from childhood?
I was made a reader on the lap of my mother. I can order my life by the books I was interested in at the time. The first book I simply could not get enough of was "Where the Wild Things Are". I loved the imagination, the fear factor, the fierce independence of Max, and that his supper was waiting on him....and it was still warm. As I became a reader I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books. In high school I loved Dean Koontz books, then I fell in love with non-fiction books about photography, spirituality, and of course, teaching.

2) What is your favourite book (or series) now?
Truthfully, the last great series I read that I just couldn't wait to read more of....Twilight Series! ***hangs her head in shame***

3) What is your opinion of e-readers?
It's hard to embrace change, but as long as words are being written, read, and loved...the format doesn't matter.

4) Finish this sentence: "On Sundays I like to..."
sleep late, read the paper/news, go to church, relax with my family.

5) Describe yourself in 5 words!
passionate, different, loving, open-minded, silly

6) Hardcover or paperback? Why?
Paperback....more $ for more books

7) Coffee or Tea?
Really depends on my mood and the flavor, but usually tea.
